The King formed an alliance with America and presented aid in the American Revolutionary War, which only increased France’s debt and civil unrest in all social classes.

On July 14th, 1789 the commoners stormed the medieval fortress known as the Bastille in a successful attempt to overthrow the monarchy. A constitutional monarchy was established under Louis, but the remaining traditional monarchies were alarmed and invaded France in an attempt to contain the revolution. The king, well aware of the demise of his French empire, unsuccessfully attempted to flee the country and was caught resulting in a formal stripping of his remaining powers. Found guilty of treason, Louis XVI was sentenced to death and guillotined January 21st, 1793.
